Helen Zimmermann Literary Agency

Updated November 16, 2009

Zimmermann Literary is a New York based boutique agency working with both large publishing houses and independent presses. The agency, started in 2003, already boasts bestsellers and award winning titles. It is the intention of the agency to create lasting relationships with clients and establish successful writing careers.I started my publishing career about 20 years ago in the marketing department of Random House. I soon became the Director of Advertising and Promotion for The Crown Publishing Group, and after 12 years I moved to New York’s Hudson Valley. For the next 5 years, I worked at a wonderful independent bookstore as their Events Director.
My experience at the publishing level and the bookstore level has given me a unique and valuable insight into each project that I work on. I am well aware of the value of in-house buzz, on-line marketing, store placement, author appearances, community reading organizations, etc.

It is my goal to successfully steer my clients through the entire process, from writing and editing to publishing and marketing.
Do I have other interests? Yes! When I’m not driving my two children wherever they need to be I am hiking in the Adirondacks (I’m an aspiring 46er, with 23 peaks to go!), skiing, gardening, and busy with my local fire department as 1st Lieutenant of the Rescue Squad

We represent:

I honestly will take on any project for which I see a viable market. I am particularly drawn to fiction that has reading group potential and non-fiction with great backlist potential.
My first client was acquired on number-of-hankies-required alone, but I will happily consider memoir (particularly memoir that speaks to a larger social or historical circumstance, or introduces me to a new phenomenon), popular culture, inspiration, women’s issues, how-to, humor, narrative non-fiction, and books on relationships.

    We do not represent:

Really, I will consider almost anything except horror, poetry, screenplays, or Science Fiction.

Submission Guidelines

Queries are preferred via email. PLEASE no attachments until I express interest. For both non-fiction and fiction queries, initial contact should just be a pitch letter. If I express interest I will need to see a full proposal for non-fiction and credentials, synopsis, and 25 pages for fiction.  I receive many submissions and regretfully can’t reply to each one, so please understand that if you don’t hear from me in two weeks it is most likely because the project isn’t right for me.
