 Denise Marcil is the president of Denise Marcil Literary Agency, Inc. Ms. Marcil represents a wide variety of commercial fiction and non-fiction—from suspense, thrillers, and contemporary women’s fiction to management books—many of which have appeared on national bestseller lists including The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times.She was named one of Glamour magazine’s Top Ten Outstanding Young Working Women. Ms. Marcil has been interviewed in many publications, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, the New Yorker, Business Week, Working Woman, and More magazine. She was the featured story in a nationally televised PBS program, “Working Women.”
For many years, Ms. Marcil served on the board of directors of the Association of Authors’ Representatives (AAR) and its predecessor, the Independent Literary Agents Association.

She was Literary Vice President for the AAR. She is chair of the AAR’s Royalty Committee on which she’s served since its inception in 1991. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the Communication Arts Institute, the parent organization for The Writer’s Colony at Dairy Hollow. Currently, she serves on its Literary Advisory Board.
Her interest and business acumen in nonfiction focuses on self-help and popular reference books such as health, women’s issues, business, and parenting. Her love of fiction is represented in suspense and crime novels and popular women’s fiction.

 

We represent: Fiction In fiction, we represent thrillers, suspense novels, and women’s contemporary fiction books that reflect the lives, challenges, loves and family issues facing today’s women — from twenty-something’s to retirees.

Nonfiction

We specialize in nonfiction books that help people’s lives.  We are currently seeking self-help and popular reference books, including parenting, business, spirituality, and biographies.  We are looking for authors with national platforms such as national seminars, columns, television and radio shows.

Submission Guidelines

What kinds of books are you looking for?

  • We represent both fiction and non-fiction.  In fiction we look for thrillers, suspense, romantic suspense, and women’s contemporary fiction that reflects the lives, challenges, love and family issues faced by today’s women–from twenty-something’s to retirees.  We are especially interested in Latina and African American fiction and chick-lit.  In non-fiction we are looking for self-help, business, and popular reference; books that help people’s lives.

What is the best way to get your attention?

  • The best way is with a well-written and compelling one-page query letter and SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope).  Do not send a query by fax or email. 

Can I speak to an agent?

  • Send a query letter.  If we are interested, we will contact you, simple as that.

I wrote a manuscript/book, can I send it to you?

  • Send a query letter first, if we’re interested we will request the full text.

What can I do to increase the odds that you will take me on as a client?

  • We want to represent strong writers with fresh ideas.  People who are professional, well-mannered, and polite always have a better chance of getting my attention.  Do your homework to assure that I represent your type of book (see “10 Ways to Find the Right Agent”).  Following up is one thing, but please, no one likes a nagger.
