9 years

I was in 3rd grade when I woke up at 6 AM to my parents crying on the phone. Nine years ago, a devastating and tragic event had come upon our country. I walked into the living room watching my mom talking frantically in Spanish to her side of the family in Chile and then found my dad on the couch, crying.

It was the first time I had seen my father cry as much as he did.  I couldn’t quite comprehend what was happening at the time, all I did know was that American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 had been flown into the World Trade Center. At around 8:15 AM my mother decided to drive me to school.

When I walked into my 3rd grade class room I had watched parents with blood shot eyes, and confused looks on my classmates faces, with so many questions filled in their eyes…it was an innocent curiosity. It was the one that wanted to know, however our parents wanted to protect us from the news.

We were young… We wouldn’t be able to understand what had happened anyway. After a long day at school, my mom had picked me up and drove me home. By the time I was home, I walked into the living room and had noticed my dad had still been glued to the T.V…My father has been working for American Airlines for over 28 years as an aircraft engineer and so now you can picture why 9/11 had affected my family and our lives so much. The lives of the Crew, that had been near and dear to my family, had been lost.

A few hours after I got home, I found out 2 other planes had been destroyed. One had flown into the Pentagon and another had hit some land, in Pennsylvania.  Still not really understanding the situation, I knew it was going to change everything from that moment on. As of right now, being a senior in high school, I have seen how 9/11 has impacted citizens, as a nation, People as a family and every one as a person.

As time passed, now the history, the story of September 11th is now not only in the memories of all of us, however it is now, in our History text books, the re-runs of the news as the event had struck is now on You Tube and people have written books and movies about what happened, what could have happened, and what precautions could have been taken in action to have avoided this horrible day that is known as September 11th.

American citizens and people of the world will never forget the depressing and heart wrenching images that follow us in our memories and in our hearts as September 11th re-appears every year, however it’s a day that helps us remember that yes we are a nation however we are a Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Drinking age should be Lowered.

Alcohol consumption in the state of California is legal when you become 21. By the time you are 21, you have already graduated high school (hopefully), have your driver’s license, maybe you are even living on your own.  By then, and if you are one of the brave ones, you enlisted in the military. You can do all these things before you can drink alcohol legally.

Sure, a lot of us have had our fair share of alcohol before 21 (we all will remember high school), but we did not drink legally. The law states that teenagers of the age of 16, can drive a car that can kill a person in an accident, at 18, civilians can vote for the president of the U.S.A., go to basic training and learn how to use weapon machinery, go to war and experience life altering and life threatening experiences before you can have a drink of alcohol legally.  That is just ridiculous.

The U.S. causalities in Iraq are the ages between 20 and 22, meaning people can go to war and die before having a drink of alcohol legally. Has anyone ever thought if someone is responsible enough to go to college, live on their own, drive, vote, make mature and life altering decisions, maybe they are old enough and wise enough to handle alcohol? Just a thought….

Has anyone ever thought High School parties would be more enjoyable if the host and people at the party didn’t have to worry about the police busting them?  I don’t have anything against police, I know they enforce the law, however what if there is a certain law that is just blasphemy.

If the drinking age was lowered, it would give people time to learn how to drink responsibly, to know when enough is enough.  About a year ago, I went to France for one month.  I remember going into pubs and seeing many teens, between the ages of 14-17 enjoying a glass of beer, and guess what? I didn’t see one that was passed out on the ground.

They all drank maturely, which is different from what people normally would see in the US.  People on their 21st birthday go ballistic, because they can finally drink legally. Why must people go through that kind of torture? I’m not necessarily saying drinking is the most important thing.  The thought however, of having a bottle of beer without having to worry about a person of higher authority ruining somebody’s casual relaxation and fun, is rather nice.

Is the world really coming to an end?

Most of us have heard the legend of the Mayans and the Mayan calendar.  On December 21st, 2012, the World as we know it will come to an end…..  We have no way of knowing if it will be fast and painless or slow and unbearable, or coming to an end in the most disastrous way, like in the movie 2012 that just came out in November.

I watched the movie and I believe it was an orgasm to the eyes, but one thing that freaked me out a little bit was in the fact, that the science and everything they said in the movie seemed probable.  It got me thinking, what if the prediction of 2012 really is a factual statement? I was always indifferent about the topic….I didn’t believe it, but I wasn’t a skeptic either…

I remember my freshman year of high school, and my Spanish teacher had explained that it wasn’t the world coming to an end, as we thought it would end with the whole human species extinct, but a new era of life. That explanation made me a little more at ease thinking that there are other theories as well.

Global warming could be another factor, of the earth ending…. so many instigators that can contribute to the world ending and others that just make the legend seem impossible…. Its up to you to decide…..  Its up to you to either wait and die a crispy critter or live your life to the fullest for the next 2 years and knowing you lived as long as you could…  Tthen dying a crispy critter. :)

“Hush Hush”, A book that reads like Twilight.

Hush HushLadies and Gentlemen, ok well mostly the Female population; if you are male and like twilight then this is also for you poor souls infatuated with Edward! Haha, so all of you have probably read the Twilight books and watched the Twilight movies.  Most of you will continue to watch the movies until the fourth installment comes out bringing to closure another literature to Hollywood saga.  It’s a sad thought, thinking that it will come to an end eventually, leaving all us searching for the next teen hunk to pawn over.

On a positive note, you all be happy with a book series I recently read extremely similar to the Twilight Saga. One book I will explain to you today is called Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. It’s about a girl Nora Grey, who isn’t exactly attracted to boys at her school.  No she is not lesbian so get your mind out of the gutter please.  She just does not see anyone worth dating.  Boys tend to be shallow and not-all-that- attractive boys and that just isn’t her cup of tea.  She is more of a loaner until a new kid, a boy named Patch, enrolls in her school.

They meet in science class… (what do you know? Just like Bella and Edward).  Their science teacher pairs them up as science partners with their first assignment being to interview each other.  How is that for a great excuse to learn intimate details of somebody interesting?  Patch seems to immediately know everything about Nora, without her ever saying a word.  This makes her extremely uncomfortable and she confides in her one true friend Vee.  They both agree that Patch is gorgeous so who really cares if he is a little eerie as well. Hush Hush 1

Patch begins to invade Nora’s dreams and then even when she is awake it is like he is always with her, surrounding her, invading her mind.  When Nora is even remotely close to anything dangerous Patch seem to always be there saving her.  She begins to wonder how he knows where she is at all times and how he has the ability to supernaturally keep her safe.  Even the way he moves seems too fast, too calculated, to precise.

I won’t tell you anymore details nor the end as that will ruin the surprise.  To find out what he is and how things turn out you will have to read the book yourself.  You know books right.  Sometimes it is still nice to turn off the TV and flip a page now and then.

I give it 10 out of 10
