Has George Clooney ever made a truly good movie? I know we have millions of women who love this man and granted he is a nice looking dude but I am just asking. Can anyone name a movie that George Clooney has made that was actually successful? Everyone points to the Ocean’s movies and granted they were decent and very successful. What we forget is those were not George Clooney movies. There were about 15 stars in the series. If I remember correctly Brad Pitt and Matt were fantastic. Their characters were the two that pulled the movie above mediocrity.
“The Men Who Stare at Goats” was a disappointment. I think the premise held a lot of hope but the final product fell short. I don’t want to slam the movie as it did have a few laughs here and there but you came out thinking two things. One, the movie could have been about 80 minutes shorter, there was just no substance and two what in the hell? A comedy should make you laugh out loud not snicker. A comedy should have you trying to quiet down not have you attempting to stay awake.

The story is focused on the military and it’s obsession with ESP or psychological warfare. As you might imagine the army struggles with the concept and flails about in numerous situations trying to keep up with the Russians. A movie with Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges and George Clooney should have been so much better. That is too much star power to waste wandering around the desert trying to find a goat. Not that you couldn’t make a move about finding a goat, but please dear God, make it funny.

I admittedly would have passed on seeing this movie since I didn’t have high expectations. I go back to my first statement challenging anyone to tell me the name of even one good George Clooney movie. My girlfriend wanted to see it and since she is not always excited about going to the theaters, I jumped at the chance and we headed out. She as with most women, love the aging actor. Again, I agree he is good looking, has a hypnotizing voice but can’t seem to parlay this into an entertaining night at out the cinema.
Bottom line is, I would pass on this one even as a rental. There are so many movies out there that one should see ahead of this. It just isn’t worth the time.
