The interesting thing (in my small mind anyway) about the United States is the diversity. We have all walks of life. Say what you want about our country but from an ethnicity standpoint I don’t know of any other that has the influence of so many different cultures. Don’t get me wrong. I like tradition and the idea of unique backgrounds but at the same time a mixing pot of life leads to greater acceptance, in theory. At times when people ask me about my heritage I simply tell them I am a mutt. A mix of life, much as the country I reside in. I have an English name but I am also filled with multiple genes from several different relatives.
Now just imagine for a moment if you are a mother, living in this country, keeping up with your bills, hectic life, doing what you can to make ends meet. You have a daughter who you happen to be driving to school. Your routine is followed most days and you do what you can to make ends meet. Sounds like the typical American family. Today on your way to school you were in a hurry and forgot your wallet sitting on the countertop. Damn, you were in a rush and your mind loses track in the frantic gathering of books, lunches and herding the kid/kids to the car. Anyone with children has been there, done that.
Today you get pulled over by the police. Shit, nobody likes that. Tickets are expensive today. It is difficult enough keeping food on the table. The policeman approaches you and asks you for your information. Here it comes…………………. Wait for it……………………… You don’t speak very good English. You are trying but with working a bazillion hours a week, and taking care of kids and family you just don’t have time. You attempt to inform him of this with the few words you know but he is having nothing of it. He interrogates you, humiliates you, chastises you and then hands over a ticket to you FOR NOT SPEAKING ENLGLISH. Is that a law?
I am not one of those people who hate law enforcement. I actually think they serve a good purpose and don’t always get the accolades they deserve. I do wonder if they get a little bit of an ego with their power to dictate randomly to any normal citizen. Who knows, but that might also be the very source that allows them to run down a dark alley after the bad guys. Still there are always lines you don’t cross. Citing a mom in front of her daughter because she doesn’t speak English is a line dude. Damn, talk about misinterpreting the law, taking things too far and for the lack of a better word sheer stupidity.
Trusting in our civil servants is mandatory for our existence to flow the right direction. Policeman, Fireman, postal workers etc. just need to play ball on the up and up. Every day people put their lives in your hand. It is one thing to do something stupid like a pilot falling asleep and missing his landing (Can anyone say Northwest Airlines, Minneapolis). Not to get side tracked but if you want to be a little scared of ever flying again read that story. Anyway, police just need to play by some simple rules. One bad dude can ruin it for the rest of you.
Sounds like Dallas is trying to take care of the problem but hopefully we at some point stop judging each other and open up a little more to acceptance. Gay marriage, minorities, ethnicity, gender, religion etc. There is always a reason to point a finger at somebody else. I am guilty in this blog quite often but if you read between the lines it is normally to make fun of a group of people who are judging somebody for being different. Call us the champion of the little guy, the hero who is hated, and the light at the end of the drain pipe that most people shit on every day.
Well, that might be taking things too far, but we do make fun of Catholics a lot for hating gay marriage. It is just too easy. Live and let live.
Dick Gregory said it best in my book, “I am really enjoying the new Martin Luther King Jr stamp – just think about all those white bigots, licking the backside of a black man.”
You have to love a black man’s ass. Not that I am gay. I am not. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Ring around the rosy.
