BBC is reporting on an incident in India where six women were stripped and beaten in the local village playground while the rest of the villagers watched. Apparently they were witches so they needed to be punished.
OMG, are you kidding me. The video isn’t as graphic or violent as I would have thought but still, it is a little freaky to even think that in today’s evolved sophisticated society we still have areas of the world that would allow this to happen.
Now in India’s defense they sent the police out there and are attempting to figure out what in the hell is going on. I grew up in southern IL and it doesn’t get much more hickish than that but even my cousins never beat women out on the merry-go-round. It was just a play structure.
I am all for cultural differences. I think it is great to head out and see the diversity prevalent in the state of CA. Damn, if for no other reason that good food it is palatable to have input from so many different cultures. Granted I am a little naive. I grew up in a town where there were only two African American girls in the grade school and they were twins. They happened to both be in my class. Well, I guess if one was in my class the other one would have been as well. They were twins. Nothing like stating the obvious.
Interestingly enough during the few years they went to school with us their home burned down three times. I didn’t really think anything of it other than how in the hell can they possibly have that much bad luck in one family. It wasn’t until they built a new house and a burning cross showed up in their front yard that I got the message. Granted I was just a kid at the time but their are moments when things have to be shoved right in your face for you to get the picture. I always looked back on my little town a little sadly after that. How could the people I knew and respected have done something like this? I didn’t get it then and I don’t get it now.
“I believe I have no prejudices whatsoever. All I need to know is that a man is a member of the human race. That’s bad enough for me.” Mark Twain
How can you take six women that live in your village and beat them? Six women who you see at the market, down at the watering hole, milking cows and mending their baskets every day. Would it be possible for you to grab your neighbor next door beat the shit out of him? Just for crossing you the wrong way? Maybe he parked on the curb in front of your driveway and it just pissed you off after the long day at work. Could you walk over to his front door with your bamboo whip and start caning him. Granted you might want to whack your neighbor now and then but we don’t do it right?
Crimes against weaker people do not sit well with me. They should be punished and punished severely. I understand we are from different cultures. I understand we have different beliefs. I understand that not all of us treat each other equally but beating six women is wrong in any country in my book.
Sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you get so sick to your stomach that you can’t imagine what a nut is.
